The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) in the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services is charged with developing the framework of standards, services and policies that enable secure nationwide health information exchange. Dr. Fridsma will describe the ONC initiatives related to the Nationwide Health Information Network, the impact of ARRA HITECH funding, the current status of health information exchange, and how they will impact North Carolina, the Southeast and the nation.

“Clinical Connectivity” - How to Use Gateways to Get Data Across the Street
This session will demonstrate how two disparate entities can exchange patient data using a CONNECT Gateway. Attendees will see the transaction flow from the requesting entity to the responding entity and back. This session will address the capabilities and limitations of a Gateway relative to the key exchange elements of patient matching (within an entity and between entities) and security of PHI data.
